Help! My Vibe Coded App Is Broken: How to Rescue and Fix It Before You Launch πŸ›Ÿ

Man holding head in frustration at desk with laptop

You built something real with an AI tool, and for a few days it felt like magic. Then you noticed a big bug, a login stopped working, or you asked the AI to change one thing and three others broke. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you are not stuck. This happens to every vibe-coding founder we've spoken to.

Can a vibe-coded app actually be rescued?

Many vibe-coded apps can be rescued, but the right next step varies a lot between who we speak to. Some need a few targeted security fixes while others need their entire foundation reworked. The only way to know which one you have is to have someone look under the hood before you spend more time or put real users on it.

That matters because AI tools are great at producing screens that look finished. They are much less reliable at the parts users never see, like security, data handling, functional API integrations, and how the pieces fit together. We covered how the people getting the best results use these tools in Effective Communication Is the #1 Skill in Vibe Coding, and a rescue is often what happens when that communication was missing or the app grew past what prompts alone can manage.

Is your app broken, or just unfinished?

Not every rough edge means trouble, and a fresh AI-built app will always have a few. Here are the signs that usually point to a deeper problem rather than a missing feature:

  • Fixing one bug creates two new ones, and the AI keeps undoing its own work.
  • Data goes missing, shows up twice, or looks different for different users.
  • Logins, password resets, or payments work some days and not others.
  • The app slows down noticeably with just a handful of testers.
  • You are not sure where your code lives.
  • You don't know what an API keys is or if its potentially exposed (this happens a lot if you don't know what you are doing, and sometimes even if you do).
  • Nobody knows how the app actually works "under the hood."

What does a professional rescue from look like?

A good review is not a line-by-line critique. It answers a handful of practical questions in plain English:

  • Security: Are passwords, keys, and customer data protected, or sitting where anyone could find them?
  • Data: Is information stored in a way that will still work when you have 5000 users instead of just 5?
  • Structure: Is the code organized well enough that a developer can safely add features, or is it a pile of patches?
  • Reliability: What happens when something fails? Who brings the app back up if the server goes offline?
  • Hosting and costs: Are you set up in a way that stays affordable as usage grows?
  • Ownership: Do you actually control the code, accounts, and domains?

What is the rescue plan we run at Founders Approach?

When a founder brings us a vibe-coded app, we follow the same three steps every time. It keeps the process predictable and gives you something concrete to take away, whether or not you continue to work with us afterward.

Step 1: A high-level AI code audit

Using AI tooling we can quickly and thoroughly scan your codebase and have a developer interpret what the AI finds. The final results go into a written report that is the start of the process. This is where problems like exposed keys, weak login handling, and tangled structure come to light. Its the first step for a founder to know what they "actually have built" after all the vibe-coding sessions.

Step 2: A hands-on UI/UX review of the app as it works today

Next, our Project Manager actually uses your app. We take our decades of experience reviewing hundreds of successful pieces of software and try to understand what works, what feels confusing, and where it falls apart. A vibe-coded web app can look fine on the front-end but the second it's used the issues come to light. Our Project Manager compiles all of these into individual tasks that are prioritized with "Most Important" right up top.

Step 3: A final report and an Estimation for Next Steps

Everything comes together in one report for you. It includes a recap of the code, a recap of the audit, and a clear plan for moving forward, including a DNE agreement with Founders Approach if you decide you want us to do the work. If you would rather take the report to another team or keep building on your own, it is yours either way.

AI Security Audit of VibeCoded App

Should you fix it, refactor it, or rebuild it?

Once the review is done, most apps land in one of three places:

  • Fix: The foundation is sound and the problems are specific. We patch the bugs, close the security gaps, and keep going. This is usually the fastest and least expensive path.
  • Rework: The app works, but it is fragile. We reorganize the code in stages so new features stop breaking old ones, without throwing away what you have built.
  • Rebuild: The structure cannot support where the business is headed, or the security problems run too deep to patch. You keep the design, the screens, and everything you learned from users, and build the engine properly.

A rebuild sounds scary, but your vibe-coded version is not wasted. It works as a working prototype that shows a developer exactly what you want, which is a real head start. It helped you communicate what you want. If you are weighing how much effort an AI-built app needs once it is live, What Does It Cost to Maintain an App After Launch? is a useful read.

How long does a rescue review take?

The review itself, meaning the audit, the hands-on walkthrough, and the final report, takes around two to three weeks, roughly 30 hours of work, and costs around $4,000. That is a fixed, bounded first step, so you know what you are getting before anything bigger is decided. Any fix, refactor, or rebuild work comes after that and is scoped separately, based on what the report finds.

If AI is part of your product and not only how you built it, our AI services page explains how we approach it. We do rescue work on web apps and mobile apps, and our teams in Baltimore, Frederick, and Providence are happy to meet in person.
